Make an Ottendorf Cipher!

Have you ever seen National Treasure? Well the code that they found on the back of the Declaration of Independence (for the record, the code isn't on the back of the declaration) is called an Ottendorf cipher. Creating this fun new code will be an awesome boredom buster for you or your kids!

An Ottendorf could consist of the following chapter(or paragraph)/sentence/word/letter.

For example, we will use these quotes by Benjamin Franklin.

1. "Take time for all things. Great haste makes great waste."

2. "Never leave that till tomorrow which you can do today."

3. "An investment in knowledge pays the best interest."

4. "Life's tragedy is that we get old too soon and wise too late."

The cipher would look something like this: For this cipher we will use 1-4/sentence/word.

3/1/4  1/2/3  2/1/7  4/1/11.

Now it's time to create your own! Once you write a message, give it to a friend or sibling. Have fun with it!
